HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, was enacted by the federal government to ensure the portability of health insurance; reduce health privacy care fraud and abuse; protect the privacy and security of an individual’s health information; and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system by standardizing the format for health care claims and other data.

The HIPAA privacy rules regulate the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI) by defining who is authorized to access protected health information as well as the scope of permitted uses and disclosures.

Protected health information is information that is individually identifiable health information and relates to the past, present, or future physical or mental health or condition of an individual; the provision of health care to a member; or the past, present, or future payment for the provision of health care to an individual; and that identifies the individual or for which there is a reasonable basis to believe the information can be used to identify the individual.

Streamlined Record Retrieval retrieves protected health information for and on behalf of customers. All information collected is made available to authorized customers and their employees, and to authorized Streamlined Record Retrieval employees on as an needed basis.

Every document ordered, retrieved and delivered to our customers is safeguarded using 128-bit SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. Streamlined Record Retrieval policy provides that, except as permitted by HIPAA, all routine and recurring uses and disclosures of PHI are limited to the minimum amount of information needed to accomplish the purpose of the use or disclosure.

It is also our policy that all requests for protected health information (except as specified above) must be limited to the minimum amount of information needed to accomplish the purpose of the request.
